What It Is

What is spinal decompression?

Spinal decompression is a treatment where a motorized table slowly stretches your spine and then lets it relax, over and over. A disc is the soft cushion between 2 bones in your spine. The stretch is meant to take pressure off the discs and the nerves near them. You stay fully dressed and lie on your back or your stomach.

Who It Helps

Who may spinal decompression help?

The doctor may suggest spinal decompression if you have one of these.

  • ✓A herniated disc. This is when the soft center of a disc pushes out and can press on a nerve.
  • ✓A bulging disc. This is when a disc spreads out past its normal edge.
  • ✓Sciatica. This is pain that runs from your low back down the back of 1 leg.
  • ✓Low back or neck pain that has lasted for weeks or months.

Many patients with disc problems report feeling better. Results vary from person to person. The doctor will tell you at your exam which care fits your case, including whether spinal decompression is part of your plan.

Your Session

What happens during a spinal decompression session?

  1. 1

You lie on the table fully dressed.

A soft harness goes around your hips or your neck, depending on where the problem is.

  2. 2

The table stretches your spine slowly.

The doctor sets the table for you. The stretch is gentle and you stay in control.

  3. 3

    You rest while it works.

Most patients find it relaxing. Some fall asleep.

  4. 4

    You get up and go.

Many patients go back to normal activities the same day.

A spinal decompression session usually takes 10 to 15 minutes. The number of sessions depends on your case. The doctor will give you a written plan.

Cost

How much does spinal decompression cost in Lancaster?

The only price we share online is the $37 new patient exam, which is required before spinal decompression. Other services are not included in the $37 exam. The cost of decompression care depends on what is going on with your spine, how much wear you have, whether you have bulging discs, and how many sessions you need. We give you exact costs as part of your care plan, in person, after your exam.

After your exam and X-rays, we go over a specific care plan with you. We show you what any costs are, what your insurance covers and what your responsibility is, before any treatment begins. There are no surprises in our office. The $37 exam is not available to patients with government insurance such as Medicare or Medicaid. See all prices and insurance details.

Insurance

Does insurance cover spinal decompression?

Some insurance plans cover part of the care that goes with spinal decompression, and some do not cover the decompression itself. We go over your coverage and costs with you after your exam and X-rays, as part of your care plan.

Questions

Questions about spinal decompression

Does spinal decompression hurt?

Most patients feel a gentle pull on the spine. Many find it relaxing. Tell the doctor if anything feels uncomfortable and the table can be adjusted.

How is spinal decompression different from an adjustment?

An adjustment is a quick push by hand on 1 joint. Spinal decompression is a slow, steady stretch of the spine by a motorized table over several minutes.

Can I have spinal decompression if I had back surgery?

It depends on the surgery. Bring any records you have to your exam, and the doctor will tell you if it is safe for you.

Do I need an MRI first?

Not always. The doctor starts with an exam and X-rays. If you already have an MRI, bring the report. An MRI is a scan that shows soft tissue like discs and nerves.
